Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
