The Premier Album of the Year: The Artist's Lux Claims the Top Place.

On the surface, this work may look more like a challenging academic challenge rather than a new popular music project by an artist whose last single was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Split into 4 different movements and sung in thirteen tongues, it is a head-spinning symphonic work exploring feminine mystery, religious ascent, and bodily transformation, frequently through the perspective of various female saints. The end of a love affair—a topic treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards here, supported by the lush presence of a major symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among an extensive list of collaborators. The pure audacity by itself renders the work of other pop stars look rather modest.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That this album manages to avoid overly academic posturing feels almost a miracle, and sole praise belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, the ambitions feel far greater on Lux, with the balancing act more pronounced. What truly elevates this fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, is an essential sense of joy. Similar to the iconic artist at her peak, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls you up in its whirlwind. Even when she's breaking your heart apart, the listener nevertheless desire to stay alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

That exuberant energy comes forth brightly during a stirring piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a comment before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds down like cartoonish force. The song then shifts to the wild single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album is that you never exactly know—or even wish to predict—where it is going to next."

Nearly every track ends in a totally different point than where it started. A track explores the fleeting nature of celebrity over a delicate symphony only to disintegrating in digital chaos. Another, a cut echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused style begins out moody and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, before sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Experiment & Accessibility

A key achievement on Lux involves straddling the line of bold innovation and broad appeal. It is no coincidence that it has achieved her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of key markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable pop songs. One track performed entirely in English builds around a refrain that seems to collect more and more nagging hooks as it spins skyward. That trick is echoed by a different powerful ballad that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural impact of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a sharp smile, like a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a grand level, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its built-in excess. It is a deep well of buried gems that takes patience to completely explore but doesn't seem like hard work. While other major pop albums of the year seemed like a meager meal, Lux offers a lavish banquet at which the guests at it, perhaps intoxicated on holy wine, flutter between discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about useless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
